Arts Nova Scotia and the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council congratulate Frances Dorsey who has been selected to receive the 2022 Established Artist Recognition Award.

Frances Dorsey

Frances Dorsey

Frances Dorsey lives in Kjipuktuk where she delights in time in her studio since retirement from teaching at NSCAD. Research into local plant-based sustainable dyes has inspired curiosity and research about the plants themselves as well as the soil and rock in which they grow. She is fortunate to live near the Backlands of Purcell’s Cove, near the Shaw Wilderness Park, drawing inspiration and ideas from the rich and distinctive terrain preserved there. Recent work explores the imaginary life of seeds, the places they take root and persist, the roles plants play for life on the planet, and the varied plant forms that exist.

About the Award

The Established Artist Recognition Award recognizes artists who have emerged from their initial training and development to become recognized, established artists in Nova Scotia.

The awards help showcase the recipients’ work to residents of the province and to people beyond our borders. This visibility will encourage artistic and economic well-being for the recipients and contribute to the health of Nova Scotia’s artistic sector in support of a well-rounded community.

The Artist Recognition Awards are presented annually by Arts Nova Scotia and the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council and are funded through the Nova Scotia Arts Endowment Fund. Each award carries a cash value of $5,000.

2022 Creative Nova Scotia Awards

The 2022 Creative Nova Scotia Awards will once again be produced by live art company HEIST and will take place at Alderney Landing Theatre in Dartmouth, NS on the evening of Thursday, November 10. The annual art party that brings together and honours artists from all over the province promises to be a great night out. This year’s event showcases a curated preshow exhibit featuring numerous Nova Scotia artists from different artistic disciplines starting at 6:45 pm which is then followed by the awards ceremony. The ceremony will be co-hosted by filmmaker and writer Sylvia Hamilton and theatre and film actor James MacLean. The night will also feature a post-show party with DJ Douvet and dancers from the House of Eights Studio.

November 1, 2022 Update

In light of the uncertainty of live events in the past three years, we booked a smaller venue than usual for our in-person 2022 Creative Nova Scotia Awards Celebration. We were delighted to discover all the seats will be filled with the award winners for 2021 and 2022, their families and friends, presenters, and performers. Demand for these seats has been higher than expected and as a result, we no longer have tickets for the in-person show to offer to the general public. However, we encourage all to join in for the awards presentation online on November 10 at 7:30 pm at https://vimeo.com/event/2559242/87fcf80847
